Update: 14.09.21

18-year-old Emma Raducanu came through the qualifying rounds to take part in the US Open and without dropping a single set, she went on to win the women’s singles title. The bookmakers immediately responded by slashing the odds on Raducanu becoming the first woman to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award since Zara Phillips won it fifteen years ago.

The recipient of the coveted award will be decided by a public vote in December once a shortlist has been announced by a panel of experts and the teenage tennis sensation is now as low as 1/20 to win it.

The leading BBC SPOTY contenders

Emma Raducanu – 1/20  Having passed her A-levels only last month, Raducanu was ranked 361st in the world as she prepared herself for the US Open qualifiers and she is now very much a household name.

Tom Daley – 10/1  Daley ended a lengthy wait for an Olympic gold medal in diving when he enjoyed an emotional victory in the synchronised 10m platform event at the Olympic Games in Tokyo last month.

Adam Peaty – 33/1  The swimmer managed to retain his men’s 100m breaststroke title at the Olympic Games where he collected two gold medals as well as a silver last month.

Sarah Storey – 50/1  She successfully defended her C4-5 women’s cycling title at the Paralympics, thus becoming GB’s most successful Paralympian ever.

Joe Root – 66/1  The England cricket captain hauled himself back to the top of the ICC Test batting rankings with successive Test centuries in his three appearances against India, scoring an average of 126.75.

18-year-old tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has had her odds substantially slashed from around 500/1 to a general 8/1 to win the Sports Personality of the Year award following her excellent showing thus far at the US Open.

Raducanu has managed to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the very first time, the teenage star seeing-off Shelby Rogers on home soil at the 2021 US Open with the result that punters have been backing her in their droves on the SPOTY betting market. Indeed only a few weeks ago, many bookies were going 500/1 that the 18-year-old would clinch the award with many other athletes hogging the spotlight in the Olympic Games. Nevertheless Raducanu’s impressive showing at the business end of the US Open won her many admirers and her SPOTY odds has tumbled as a result, some bookies even going as low as 13/2.

Having stormed onto the scene at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, Raducanu is showing absolutely no sign of slowing down anytime soon and she has made it into the last eight in the US Open having yet to drop a set in the competition. On the evidence of her latest performances, you would be brave to bet against her and she is just 8/1 to win the tournament.
