Southampton v Leicester City Match Preview
Live coverage on Sky Sports at 8pm, Friday 30th April 2021
- Leicester City have won ten of their sixteen away games in the Premier League
- All-but-one of Leicester’s last six league games have contained over 2.5 goals
- Southampton’s last five league games have each contained over 2.5 goals
- The Saints have lost twelve of their last fifteen Premier League matches
These two sides met in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium just two weeks ago and given that there was much riding on that clash, we witnessed a nervy and somewhat tense affair with Leicester City edging their way into the final on the back of a 1-0 win. This Premier League meeting looks set to be far more open that the previous encounter between these sides and we envisage seeing a few goals along the way.
Leicester City’s great character was on display when they fought their way back from behind to beat Crystal Palace in their last outing and they are looking well placed to secure for themselves a top-three finish to the Premier League campaign. Brendan Rodgers has done very well indeed this term and his team have shown determination and an ability to grind out wins against the most stubborn of opposition along the way.
Southampton will head into this match having enjoyed a nine-day rest and Ralph Hassenhuttl will be desperate to steer his side to the sort of form they enjoyed earlier in the campaign. The Saints had a bright start to the season but they have seen a drop off in results since the turn of the year with injuries certainly playing a part. Hassenhuttl employs a high energy style of play and this too may have taken its toll at this late stage of the campaign.
That said, Premier League survival and a decent FA Cup run will be seen by many as a positive, however the Saints’ defensive frailties have been clear for all to see recently with two or more goals conceded in each of their last five Premier League outings.
Leicester City have been excellent on their travels this term and there’s value to be had in backing them on the outright market at odds-against, however we’ll be adding to this value by adding ‘over 2.5 goals’ which seems a sensible approach given both sides’ recent results.
Our tip: Back Leicester to win and over 2.5 goals at 21/10
