Raphael Varane on his way to Manchester United
Raphael Varane is now set to become the third signing of the summer transfer window for Manchester United.
It has now been confirmed that the ‘Raphael Varane to Old Trafford transfer saga’ has come to an end, the Red Devils agreeing in principle a deal with the French international. United will be looking to go one better than their second-place finish of 2020/21 at the end of the upcoming campaign and the signing of Varane will certainly improve their chances.
The summer transfer window has already been productive for Manchester United, however securing the signature of Varane has been a lengthy process. The Red Devils looked to sign the player way back in 2011 at a time when they had lured David De Sea from Atletico Madrid, Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers and Ashley Young from Aston Villa. Indeed Varane had spoken with Alex Ferguson regarding a move to Old Trafford but he had instead opted to move to Real Madrid.
Jose Mourinho was also interested in signing Raphael Varane in 2016 and the defender admitted that he found this interest ‘flattering’.
Once this deal goes through, the French international will be plying his trade alongside Paul Pogba and Varane is certainly a huge admirer of his compatriot.
The likelihood is that Varane won’t be the last summer signing for United and they also have Kieran Trippier in their sights. Trippier has made little secret of his desire to move back to the Premier League after spending two years in Spain and United will almost certainly put in another bid to lure him to Old Trafford.
Manchester United have had to patiently wait ten years in order to get their hands on Raphael Varane but it appears that their wait is about to come to an end.
Manchester United have reportedly agreed a £41 million fee with Spanish giants Real Madrid for French international Raphael Varane. This fee includes all add-ons and once the medical has been undertaken, the deal is very likely to go through. Having already secured the signature of Jason Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million, the signing of Varane would clearly be a huge statement of intent from the Red Devils.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished second in the table at the close of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign although a full twelve points separated them from champions Manchester City. Varane is one of the best defenders in the world and he will undoubtedly be a useful addition to the United set-up as the club look to go one better in 2021/22.
The Frenchman has made in excess of 350 appearances for Real Madrid and he has been capped 79 times by his national side. Indeed he started in each of France’s four games at the European Championships this summer before they were dumped out on penalties by Switzerland. He has been excellent at Real Madrid since the start of his time at the club and in terms of sheer quality, there aren’t many better.
Should the deal go through as is expected, the first United action for Varane could be in their opening-weekend Premier League clash with Leeds United on 14th August.
Manchester United have reportedly left Real Madrid with no real option but to let go of Frenchman Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window after they blew the Spanish giants out of the water thanks to a huge financial offering. The Real player is top of the list for United as they look to bolster their defence and a deal of £43.1 million is reportedly close to completion at the time of writing. Varane’s contract has less than a year left and as such the fee is relatively low for the 28-year-old.
Varane has won the Champions League on four occasions and he also won a World Cup winners medal in 2018 with France. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be confident of Varane becoming a bedrock for his team as they look to go one better than last season and lift the Premier League title. Nevertheless there is always a danger that the Frenchman is using the Red Devils in order to get a better deal from Real Madrid, however it has been claimed that Varane is keen on a move to Old Trafford and with Real looking to slash their budget next season, a deal would seem like a good move for all concerned.
The bookmakers have decisively slashed the odds on Varane moving to Manchester United to just 1/20, way ahead of Chelsea and PSG who are out at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively. The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are deemed to be very much out of the running at 40/1 and 50/1 respectively.

Now that the confirmation of Jason Sancho’s transfer is all but imminent, the Red Devils have turned their focus towards a revamp of their defence and reports indicate that they will be signing Raphael Varane this summer. The Frenchman is a ‘tier one’ defender and securing his signature will be a massive coup for Manchester United. Indeed with twelve months left on his Real Madrid contract, hopes are extremely high that a move can be made very soon.
Real boss Carlo Ancelotti was resigned to losing the player, however the transfer saga has been plodding along at a snail’s pace. According to reports, this has been United’s doing and as things stand the option of Varane renewing his contract with the Spanish giants is effectively dead in the water.
The main reason for Real agreeing to the deal is that the club would much rather sell the player and get a significant sum into their bank account than lose him for nothing in twelve month’s time. The Spanish club are tightening budgets right now due to rebuilding work on the Bernabeu and the effects of the pandemic which have eaten into match-day revenues.
Varane is undoubtedly a valuable player although more importantly he is a saleable asset. They will certainly miss him but the fact remains that they have little option but to shift him for the best price possible.
It is crystal clear that Manchester United aren’t going to be messing about this summer and the possible signing of Raphael Varane could prove to be a crucial moment in the Premier League campaign. A partnership between Harry Maguire and Varane is undoubtedly mouthwatering and it could propel the Red Devils to new heights.
Manchester United have been slashed into firm favourites to secure the signature of Real Madrid defender Rafael Varane before the end of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils will be looking to bolster their defence before the start of the 2021/22 campaign and Varane would fit the bill nicely as far as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is concerned.
The bookmakers have cut the odds on the French centre back moving to Old Trafford this summer from a general 4/1 to around 1/2 following a flurry of recent bets. Indeed over the past week or so, over half of all bets in this market have been aimed towards Varane signing for the Red Devils before the end of August. Indeed it would appear that United have little in the way of real competition in the market with closest rivals Paris Saint Germain coming in next at odds of 14/1. Chelsea are third favourites to sign the Frenchman at odds of 25/1 while Liverpool and Juventus are further out at a general 33/1 apiece.
Elsewhere in the market, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are 40/1 to get their hands on the player while Bayern Munich and Arsenal complete the possible contenders at 50/1 and 66/1 respectively.
