Update: 13.01.21

We confidently predicted that Sheffield United would get their first win of the 2020/21 campaign against Newcastle United last night and so it proved, Billy Sharp scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to give the Blades all three points and move them to just three points behind West Bromwich Albion.

This win will have been a huge boost to a Blades side which had previously collected just two points since the start of the campaign, however Chris Wilder’s men remain firmly at the foot of the table with nine points separating them from safety as things stand. Not only that but they have played at least one game more than the sides immediately above them in the Premier League table and the bookies are still very much of the opinion that they will be plying their trade in the Championship next season.

Priced at 1/33 for the drop prior to the meeting with Newcastle United, Wilder’s men are now 1/16 for the drop, this effectively meaning that the bookmakers feel that it is now half as likely that they will drop into the second tier as it was prior to last night’s match. There can be no doubt that the much-needed win will have boosted confidence in the Blades squad, however this was perhaps one of their easiest challenges of the campaign and it’s just going to get harder from this point onwards.

1/16 –  Sheffield United

1/6  –  West Bromwich Albion

4/5  –  Fulham

3/1  –  Newcastle United

10/3 –  Burnley

7/2  –  Brighton & Hove Albion

9/1  –  Crystal Palace

To say that this has been a very hard season for Sheffield United would be a massive understatement, the Blades looking out of their depth and collecting a measly two points from their seventeen league outings. Manager Chris Wilder is a man under pressure to turn things around, however the likelihood that he will actually be given a chance to do so is particularly slim given that he is huge odds-on favourite to be the next managerial casualty in the Premier League.

As things stand, the Blades sit twelve points away from safety and even their most ardent fans have resigned themselves to the fact that Championship football will be coming their way next season. That may be no bad thing given that their last Championship campaign was certainly far more enjoyable than this one and at odds of 1/33 on the Blades going down, few really believe that they can avoid the drop.

West Bromwich Albion are another side looking into the relegation abyss, the Baggies now under the guidance of Sam Allardyce following the recent sacking of Slaven Bilic. West Brom sit second from bottom in the league table with just eight points to their name and the bookmakers go a general 1/8 that they find themselves straight back in the Championship at the first time of asking.

Completing the bottom three in the Premier League are Fulham, the Cottagers showing signs of improvement in recent weeks but still unable to haul themselves out of the relegation zone and odds-on at 4/5 to be relegated back down after just a single season in the top-flight.
