Now that the European Championships are out of the way, attention is turning to the upcoming 2021/22 season. There are certain to be some managerial casualties in the early stages of the campaign and Steve Bruce remains one of the favourites for the chop, however if the current Magpies boss is shown the door, who will replace him in the St James’ Park dugout?

Steve Bruce gave himself more precious time at Newcastle United thanks to a solid end to the 2020/21 season, however the Magpies struggled throughout the season and their final position of twelfth was no indication of their woes in the earlier stages of the campaign. As such, manager Steve Bruce was under almost constant pressure and while his men avoided relegation by a substantial margin at the end of play, the pressure will be on to get things off to a solid start.

Given that Bruce is deemed to be on the danger list, the bookies have been busy pricing up a likely successor to the under-fire Magpies manager and as things stand, Graeme Jones is being touted as the man most likely to take charge at St James’ Park in the event that the position becomes vacant. Jones was assistant coach at Newcastle United for a brief period from January 2021 to May 2021 when he became part of Gareth Southgate’s coaching staff for the duration of the European Championships. Jones will soon return to Tyneside following his loan spell with the Three Lions and he is a 6/5 punt to take charge of the Magpies.

Elsewhere in the ‘Next Newcastle United Manager’ betting market, former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is second favourite at 2/1 to be given the job while ex Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is next at 6/1.
