Mansfield Town v Carlisle United

3pm, Saturday 16th January 2021

Carlisle United find themselves in somewhat unusual territory, Chris Beech’s men sitting comfortably in pole position in the League Two table as we fast approach the half-way point in the campaign. The Cumbrians have usually hovered around the middle of the division in each of the past few seasons but they now find themselves favourites to make the leap up to League One.

Beech’s men have been enjoying some excellent form of late with five wins, one draw and just a single defeat in their last seven league matches. They edged past Mansfield Town to the tune of 1-0 when the two sides met at Brunton Park last month and the Cumbrians are slight favourites to claim all three points on Saturday afternoon, assuming of course that the match does actually go ahead as planned.

Carlisle’s midweek clash with Harrogate Town ended with postponement due to floodlight failure and the pandemic has been causing havoc with fixtures up and down the country, therefore fingers are being crossed in the visitors’ camp that this game takes place and Carlisle don’t lose ground at the top of the division.

As for Mansfield Town, they have also been enjoying some excellent form of late with wins in each of their last four league matches. Indeed their last defeat in the league came against Carlisle United and we envisage the hosts giving a decent account of themselves this weekend.

The Stags currently sit in twelfth position in the league table and they appear to have put their shaky early-season form behind them, however Carlisle are red-hot right now and there’s no way we’ll be going against Chris Beech’s men in this one.
