Solid start

Bruno Fernandes provided United with an excellent start to their Europa League semi-final clash with Serie A side AS Roma last night as he swept home a first-time lay-off from Cavani in the 9th minute, however a handball by Paul Pogba resulted in a penalty being awarded to the visitors just eight minutes later and this was coolly slotted home by Lorenzo Pellegrini. Indeed Roma took the lead before half-time when Edin Dzeko banged in his sixth goal in five appearances at Old Trafford in the 33rd minute to turn the tie on its head.

Back in the lead

After the break, United managed to rally with Cavani levelling matters with an excellent effort and he added his second sixteen minutes later to take the Red Devils back into the lead. United weren’t in the mood to surrender their narrow advantage a second time and they were awarded a somewhat fortunate penalty in the 71st minute which Fernandes slotted home without issue.

Rout completed

Pogba soon got his name onto the goal sheet with an excellent header in the 75th minute and Greenwood ran to a pass from Cavani to complete the rout, sending United on their way to becoming the first side to score six in a European semi-final since 1964.

Only a catastrophic collapse in the second leg in the Italian capital will prevent United from making it through to the finals of the competition.
