January hasn’t been a good month for League One title favourites Portsmouth, the south-coast outfit having been dumped out of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Bristol City and following this with a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of league rivals Peterborough United in the Papa John’s Trophy last night. Nevertheless Pompey remain favourites to lift the League One trophy at the end of the season and having been out of league action since December 18th, boss Kenny Jackett will be keen to resume hostilities as soon as possible.
Many bookmakers go around 7/4 on Portsmouth finishing the season in pole position in the third-tier and thus winning promotion to the Championship. Prior to this month’s cup defeats, Pompey had won three and drawn one of their previous four league outings and they sit in third position in the league table with three points separating them from second-placed Hull City and seven separating them from table-topping Lincoln City. More importantly perhaps, Portsmouth enjoy at least one game-in-hand over both sides above them in the League One table and given recent showings in the league, we would expect them to add to their points tally here.
Table-toppers Lincoln City have played at least one game more than the sides immediately below them in the division and the Imps are second-favourites for the League One title at odds of 3/1 while second-placed Hull City are next in the betting at 10/3.
7/4 – Portsmouth
3/1 – Lincoln City
10/3 – Hull City
10/1 – Peterborough United
10/1 – Sunderland
Portsmouth have been close to the top of the League One table since the early stages of the campaign although they haven’t kicked a ball in anger since beating fellow title-hopefuls Hull City 2-0 on 18th December. Nevertheless despite Pompey sitting in third position in the division, the bookmakers remain confident that they will clinch the title at the end of the season and haul themselves into the Championship.
Most firms go just 9/4 that Kenny Jackett’s men finish in pole position with some going as low as 7/4, however the south-coast outfit face stiff competition in what is a very tough division to climb out of. As things stand, Lincoln City occupy top spot in League One with four points separating them from the rest of the chasing pack. The Imps have played a game more than the sides below them in the table and the bookies go 5/1 that they finish top of the pile, behind 3/1 second-favourites Hull City who are currently second in the division.
Table-topping Lincoln have been enjoying some impressive form along the way with their twenty league outings returning thirteen wins and two draws, this excellent form continuing at the weekend when they brushed aside AFC Wimbledon to the tune of 2-1, this win taking their goal-tally to an impressive eleven from three games.
