Chelsea v Zenit St Petersburg Match Preview

Live coverage on BT Sport at 8pm, Tuesday 14th September 2021

  • Chelsea have kept clean sheets in five of their last seven in the Champions League
  • Chelsea have lost just one of their last thirteen in this competition
  • Zenit have conceded two or more in all-but-one of their last seven Champions League games

Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy in hugely impressive fashion at the Estadio Do Dragao last season with a 1-0 victory over Premier League rivals Manchester City. Indeed a massive amount of credit should go to Blues manager Thomas Tuchel who managed to negotiate some tough games against the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid en-route to the final. Chelsea are currently a 9/1 shot to successfully defend their European title and this does look rather on the large side given Thomas Tuchel’s record and the defensive resilience of his Blues side.

Chelsea’s curtain raiser in the competition looks a very manageable one given that tonight’s opponents Zenit have rarely managed to go deep in this tournament. Their is a stark difference in strength between the Premier League and the Russian top-flight and we expect this to be in evidence at Stamford Bridge.

It’s hardly a surprise to see the Blues so short in the outright market here although it does force us to get a bit more creative from a betting perspective. With that in mind, we’ll be splitting our stakes between the top-two favourites in the ‘Correct Scores’ betting market, namely 2-0 and 3-0 to Chelsea at odds of 5/1 and 6/1 respectively. Chelsea have managed clean sheets against sides far stronger than tonight’s opponents although in fairness we envisage Tuchel rotating his squad ahead of this weekend’s North London derby meeting with Tottenham Hotspur should they find themselves a couple of goals ahead tonight.
