Price drifts on Dortmund striker Erling Haaland moving to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea are no longer favourites to secure the signature of in-demand Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland before the end of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea remain very much in the running to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund before the end of the summer transfer window.
There is a distinct possibility that Chelsea may decide to offer Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund a swap deal in order to secure the signature of Erling Haaland this summer. The German outfit have reportedly given the player a price tag of £170 million as they look to keep their hands on their Norwegian striker. Nevertheless Chelsea might consider offering Borussia one of their players in part-exchange for Haaland and thus try and force the hand of the Bundesliga side.
Haaland’s contract with Dortmund lasts until 2024 although there is a release clause would allow him to leave next summer for £67 million. Nevertheless the Blues won’t want to wait that long and are currently searching for players who could move to the German side as part of a deal. One of these could prove to be Hakim Ziyech, the 28-year-old failing to impress since moving from Ajax for £36 million in 2020.
The Moroccan was on the bench for Chelsea’s Champions League Final win over Premier League rivals Manchester City earlier this year but in 23 league outings he mustered just two goals in 2020/21.
Another possibility for a move to Dortmund is Callum Hudson-Odoi who was something of a bit part player in 2020/21 under Frank Lampard and successor Thomas Tuchel, however it remains to be seen whether Borussia would be willing to accept a swap deal for Haaland.
The chances of Erling Haaland making a move to Chelsea this summer are starting to look pretty thin with some bookmakers going 1/7 that he stays with Borussia Dortmund into the new Bundesliga campaign. Only a few days ago, Haaland was odds-on at 10/11 to sign with the Blues during the summer transfer window but the odds on him doing so are 7/4 at the time of writing.
Having enjoyed an excellent 2020/21 campaign, the Norwegian striker has been the subject of interest by numerous top European clubs and Chelsea seemed to be at the head of the queue to land his signature. Indeed should the player decide to leave his current employers, then the Blues remain favourites to get their hands on him although this is looking more and more unlikely as the start of the 2021/22 campaign rolls ever closer.
The 20-year-old has been valued at around £150 million although reports have indicated that Dortmund will be asking for £172 million before they will consider letting him move to pastures new. This in itself have limited interest to the richest clubs on the continent and the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Manchester United feature highly in the market at 5/1, 7/1 and 14/1 respectively.
Clearly Borussia Dortmund will be more than happy to keep hold of the youngster this summer and on this basis, they will be holding firm on any offers. Nevertheless, Haaland’s price has expected to drop to around £62 million next summer and this will open him up to many more clubs, therefore as far as Chelsea and Manchester City are concerned this is the best time to get their hands on the number 9.
The Blues have allegedly readied themselves for a £135 million offer on the player and while this falls short of the valuation, it is around double what Dortmund could realistically expect in twelve months’ time.
It is now a two-horse race to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland with both Chelsea and Manchester City eager to secure the signature of the Norwegian youngster. Haaland has been a huge hit in Germany and there is little doubt that he would thrive in the Premier League, especially at a club such as Chelsea or Man City. Reports suggest that Chelsea are readying a bid of £135 million for the 20-year-old as they home in on their main target for the summer, however this falls far short of the alleged £172 million asking price demanded by Dortmund. Nevertheless this so-called fantasy offer is twice what the player would sell for next summer and the Blues are only too aware of the hefty fees which would go to player agent Mino Raiola, therefore it is clear why the West London club want to keep the transfer sum as low as possible.
That said, Dortmund will be eager to keep Haaland on the books for next season and as such a massive bid will be necessary in order to tempt the Budesliga side to sell. As we move further into the transfer window, the Blues will need to make moves for a new striker now that Olivier Giroud is off to AC Milan.
Some bookmakers have further slashed the odds on Haaland making a move to Stamford Bridge to as low as 10/11, while Manchester City remain the only other side in single figures on the market, some firms going just 3/1 that he ends up at the Etihad Stadium after the summer transfer window slams shut.
Erling Haaland Next Club Odds
10/11 – Chelsea
3/1 – Manchester City
10/3 – Real Madrid
10/1 – Manchester United
20/1 – Barcelona
33/1 – Bayern Munich
33/1 – Liverpool
Erling Haaland has enjoyed an excellent season with Borussia Dortmund and this has attracted the attention of numerous top European clubs ahead of the new season, however European champions Chelsea are heading the betting market to be the next club for the young Norwegian striker.
Indeed some bookies go as low as 10/11 that the Dortmund hitman ends up with the West London club either at the start of season or in the opening few weeks. Indeed Haaland to Chelsea has been the most backed selection with many bookmakers in this particular market and while many other top clubs are interested in securing his signature, they are way behind in the running.
Several clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation and these include Manchester City and Real Madrid who are priced at 3/1 and 10/3 to get their hands on the Norwegian. Manchester United are next in the market at general odds of 10/1 while Barcelona are a 20/1 shot to tempt him to the Nou Camp.
Nevertheless Chelsea are well placed to grab themselves a deal given that they are one of few clubs able to meet the alleged £172 million price. Indeed with many clubs apparently waiting for his price to drop next summer, the current transfer window may well be a great opportunity for the Blues to get their man.
