Celtic open their Champions League qualifying account when they welcome Danish side FC Midtjylland to Parkhead tonight in what has the makings of a cagey encounter.
Having failed miserably in European competition last season and finishing second to arch-rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, Celtic will be desperate to bounce back and fire on all cylinders in the new campaign. That campaign gets underway tonight when the Hoops entertain FC Midtjylland in the Champions League qualifiers and this will be the first big test for new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Having spent much of the summer hunting for a suitable replacement for Neil Lennon, Celtic only appointed Postecoglou a few weeks ago and as such he hasn’t had much time to spend with his new charges. The Hoops really won’t be in a good place right now given that they could only manage a goal-less draw with Bristol City in their last away friendly and lost 1-0 at home to Preston North End on Saturday, however they will need to up their game in what is their first big test tonight.
These results won’t have done anything to boost confidence ahead of what promises to be another tough season although opponents Midtjylland won’t be in the highest of spirits given that they lost to OB in their opening league match of the season.
As with most of these two-legged encounters, this opening game will almost certainly prove to be extremely cagey and while both teams are relatively experienced campaigners at this level, we envisage this ending om stalemate with the bookies going 13/5 on such an outcome.
