Celtic crash out of UEFA Champions League

New Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou faced his first real test of the season in the two-legged affair with Midtjylland and he failed miserably.

If Celtic wish to be taken seriously, not just in Europe but also with regard to the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership title race, then they really need to do much better than this. Having battled their way to a draw at the end of normal time against FC Midtjylland, the Hoops looked completely out of it in extra time and succumbed to the pressure of their hosts.

The Danish outfit bagged the winner in extra time and thoroughly controlled the game towards the end. While taking nothing away from the home side, the visitors surprised many with their toothless performance. Indeed Midtjylland were pretty much in full control throughout the match and in fairness, the Hoops deserved absolutely nothing from this encounter. Which is exactly what they got.

While this was a massive blow for the Hoops, it was a huge achievement for the underdogs and they deserved to qualify. The big question is, where do Celtic go from here?

This was a big test for new boss Ange Postecoglou and it was one which he failed in dismal fashion. The Hoops will be desperate to keep up with Rangers this coming season but on their European performance they will get nowhere near the Light Blues. The Greek manager faces a big battle to continue the European run as his men drop down into the Europa League where they come up against FK Jablonec.

This continues a dreadful Champions League run as the Hoops fail to make it through to the group stages of the competition for the fourth successive season. In complete contrast, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers appear to have found their feet in Europe and they will once again look to make it through to the latter stages of European competition, starting with a meeting with Malmo next week.
