Carlisle United v Cambridge United Match Preview
Brunton Park. Kick-off: 3pm, Saturday 27th March 2021
- Cambridge United sit second in the League Two table
- The U’s have won each of their last two outings
- Carlisle United have sunk to twelfth in the table
- The Cumbrians have won once in their last twelve league games
Only a few weeks ago, Carlisle United were odds-on favourites to clinch promotion to League One at the end of the season, however the pressure has clearly been getting to Chris Beech’s men and they have sunk down the division like the proverbial stone on the back of some hugely disappointing and quite frankly, dreadful performances.
The Cumbrians have picked up just a single win from their last twelve league games and this sort of dire form certainly won’t be rewarding them with promotion. Indeed against a woeful Leyton Orient side on Tuesday evening, Carlisle were completely lacking in all areas and it is becoming clear that Chris Beech’s ideas aren’t getting through to the players, assuming that he does actually have any ideas.
Carlisle are a complete shambles right now and it’s fair to say that second-placed Cambridge United won’t exactly be shaking in their boots at the prospect of visiting Brunton Park this weekend. The U’s have been clinging onto their top-two berth on-and-off for many weeks now and victory over the Cumbrians this weekend could be enough to send them into pole position in the table, assuming Cheltenham fail to collect maximum points in their own weekend outing.
Mark Bonner’s men have been far from the perfect package it must be said and with three defeats in their last seven there is clearly a chance that Cambridge could drop points here. Nevertheless we have absolutely no faith in Carlisle right now and that shouldn’t come as any surprise to anyone reading this. In fairness, the hosts are a complete mess at the moment and odds of 2/1 on a Cambridge United win seem too good to be true as far as we’re concerned.
