Austria v Scotland Match Preview & Best Odds

Live coverage on Sky Sports at 7:45pm, Tuesday 7th September 2021

  • Scotland have lost just once in their qualifying group
  • Steve Clarke’s men have scored five and conceded just five
  • The Scots have scored in four of their five qualifying games
  • Austria have leaked twelve goals in their five qualifiers

Scotland head to the Austrian capital this evening in what is a huge game in Group F. Just a single point separates these two sides ahead of this clash and nothing short of victory will do as they both aim to boost their chances of making it to Qatar next year.

Scotland won for the first time in five games when they collected all three points at the expense of Moldova on Saturday, Lyndon Dkyes scoring the only goal of the game early on. The performance certainly didn’t set pulses racing and it wasn’t pretty to watch, however a win is a win and it means that the Scots have a realistic chance of finishing in the top two in Group F.

Austria went down 5-2 to Israel in their last qualifier and on the back of this disappointing result they dropped behind the Scots and into fourth position in the group, therefore this is also very much a must-win for the home side tonight. Coach Franco Foda has no new injuries in his squad although Marcel Sabitzer will still be absent. As far as Scotland are concerned, Kenny McLean and Ryan Fraser have been ruled out for this match but captain Andrew Robertson may be fit enough to make a start.

From a betting perspective, backing cards to be handed out seems to be a good way to approach this match. 7 cards were handed out in the 2-2 draw at Hampden Park in the reverse fixture earlier this year and with much at stake, this could well be an edgy,  scrappy and bad-tempered affair. Indeed neither side should runaway with this match and time-wasting could be an issue later on. This is a must-win for both sides and this should certainly result in an exciting atmosphere, therefore we’re happy to take-on Both Teams to Receive 2+ Cards at best odds of 2/1.
